BBarr Hand Tools one of the rare producers of timber framing chisels made in the USA. Barr is a unique brand because their chisels are hand forged. If you're used to a machine-made chisel, there is no comparison. In a day and age where most tools are drop forged, stamped or cut out and then poorly tempered, a majority of people have never had the pleasure of using a well-made tool. Hand forging with hammers compresses the steel, introducing more carbon into a smaller area. Carbon is what cuts; therefore, you get a superior edge. After annealing, the tools are quenched then tempered to the proper hardness. The tool is then fitted with a white oak handle that seats properly in the socket. The shock ring on top helps prevent splitting.

The other benefit to the Barr line of tools is that they come with a razor-sharp edge. Your clumsy web editor had a slight encounter with the 2-inch chisel, and even though I walked away, I have sixteen stitches to show for it! This is an excellent tool with an edge so sharp you could shave with it.

Sizes are approximate and may vary slightly. The 1-in allows you to get into tight spots and remove wood with skilled precision. The 1-1/2-in is probably the most universally used size; though, a 1-inch and a 2-inch are wonderfully useful.
