Shelter Institute was introduced to the idea of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in 2002 by two employees who had a dream of operating a farm to provide vegetables for local consumption. Bill and Reba created Hatchet Cove Farm and provide incredibly delicious produce to Shelter Institute Staff, local area restaurants and grocers up and down the midcoast of Maine.

If you are interested in learning more about the CSA movement or perhaps about creating your own CSA, Sharing the Harvest is an excellent source of information. Henderson and Van En describe what a CSA is and how it fits into the global economy, how to get started, select a farmer, participate in the growing of the vegetables, and how to finance the project. The look at several models to compare and contrast and then provide a collection of resources to help you get your CSA going.
